Have you ever wondered how someone stands in front of all huge audience and speak so flawlessly? Stage fear is something that every human being posses. Some are more freighted by it, some are less. I have seen people hosting an event with utter confidence even if they are scared to death from inside. Like all fears, we need bravery to over the fear of stage too. I read somewhere bravery is not about, not being scared; it’s about performing required actions in a state of fear.
In this article, we will be discussing about the path that you can take that will lead you to become a stage perfect person.
Every one of us has our own ways to deal with the tremendous problems that life throws at us. I’ll tell you some of mine weird but effective methods which help me deliver a good if not great speech in front of a crowd. Some of you might agree with me and some of you won’t and I don’t have any problem with that. But I will do suggest you to try them at least once.
My 8 methods to overcome stage fear
- Be nervous
First of all you should understand that there is not a single person in the world who is not nervous while facing a crowd. It is okay to be nervous. When you embed it completely in your mind you’ll lose the fear of failing and become more confident.
- Supremacy
We all know that is not the speaking that we fear, it’s the eyes staring at us. These eyes are filled with judgment, laugh, curiosity, interest etc. When you jump onto the stage these eyes welcomes you.
So, the first thing you do is gaze back at them and that’s where your thoughts start to crumble. I have been in this position many times and what I have learned is that one should not look at the crowd as people who are there you judge you but as some people who are here to listen to you, admire you and learn from you.
This feeling of supremacy will make you stand taller in front of them and you will become the boss.
- Being Oblivious
These methods can work wonders for the people with great imagination and thinking abilities.
In this method you just have you feel that only the table, chair and walls are listening to you. No people. No eyes. This will make you confident. Because these are non-living things that have opinions or feelings.
They will never laugh at you even if you fell off the stage. You can’t possibly embarrass yourself in front of them and if you can’t be embarrassed then what’s there to fear.
- Take them as individuals
The worst thing you can do is to deals with them all at once. You need to separate them from the herd and take them one by one. The reason behind this is very simple; one against one is far better than one against several people. Keeping this in mind you have to play your mind games. How to do it? You can to this by looking at a single person and speaking as if that line or sentence is dedicated to that individual only. The second thing you can do is by asking a single question from individuals from the crowd. This is passing the ball into their court. Now, they get nervous answering your question and believe me a nervous crowd is easier you deal with then a few people with great confidence. A speaker who makes conversation with the crowd is considered to be the better speaker.
- Energy drinks
You might find it weird but some of these energy drinks can give you a real bing and will make you confident to face crowd. They contain a high level of caffeine and sugar which gives you extra energy. In fashion industry, models often consume energy drink before hitting the ramp. So, if it can help them it can surely help you.
- Breathing
Many people don’t know that oxygen can take you to a euphoric state where every thing is calm and composed including you. The people who do meditation breathe perfectly, which increase the level of oxygen in their body and make it calm.
So, I advice all of you people to breath of at least 5-10 minutes before beginning your speech because if you are calm then you can concentrate more on the reason for which you are there. This method is one of the most effective methods that I have mentioned in this article.
- Preparing well
I have seen all my life that people with knowledge are more confident than the ignorant one. Sometimes, even if they say something wrong with confidence there is nobody to question them. So, be prepared. Study about all the things that you are going to speak about in great details. People will be scared to point out your mistakes if they are aware about the fact that you have more knowledge about the topic.
- Hand Movements
Most the people get stiff when they are nervous and when they get stiff they form a shell around them from which it is difficult to come out.The easiest solution to this is hand movements. Moving your hands not only frees you from that shell but also manifests great confidence. Hands gestures also helps to you explain things in a more of a graphical ways, so, it becomes easy for audience to understand.
- Jump and Dance
You might consider it weirdest of all methods but I think it is quite useful. Just before you go on stage you just jump up and down wildly at one spot. If you like dancing then you can replace jumping by dancing. This will increase the blood pressure and introduce a little adrenaline in your body. After it you will lose that fear of stage and everything will start to go smoothly. - Listen to music
If you are a music freak then you can listen to music too. It also pumps adrenaline in your body. If the music is loud and up beats then it is better.
Your opinion – How to overcome stage fear
These were few of my methods that I use often to win over the fear of stage. Hope, they’ll help you too. As I have said earlier that everyone of us have different techniques to deal with this. These will be as effective as you use them. So, I’ll be glad to know you techniques of overcoming stage fear.

Hi Shorya,
Brilliant! This is something I really need mate
I’ve stage fear as an individual and no need to be lot of crowdy sometimes
Anyway I feel ‘em that people always gazing at me to find something goes wrong. So I get nervous and start shivering most of the time
Anyway as I go through higher studies I had few moments to go in front and speak. It makes me confident a bit and I feel improvement over time. For me I have no thoughts to devote here as tips but one thing I experienced is go and speak as you can else it will never happen
Thanks for wonderful post in this New Year mate
Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year…
Cheers…
Hi Mayura,
Thanks mate,
It happens with everyone no matter how big personality you are ,how confident you are.It is very natural ,So instead of thinking that what audience will think ,they will laugh at me etc. one should set his/her mind that being nervous is normal it happens with every one and i am nervous ,this will decrease the nervous level a lot. After setting up your mind you can follow my other methods which make you more relax.
Thank You
